privacy and data protection

Online services have evolved considerably and those which process personal information – like social networks and location based online services - have become more efficient and more significant in people’s lives.

Orange welcomes the ambitious plan to revise European data protection rules, among whose clauses there are measures the telecoms industry has long wanted to see improved.

The challenges are twofold: to adapt the data protection rules to the digital era and give citizens greater control over the use of information concerning them. Updating the 1995 text - adopted before the general use of online services - is now essential as is the strengthening of the rights of users of these services.

Some improvements are nevertheless still possible in order to achieve the stated aims of the Regulation - and to produce realistic, pragmatic and effective rules.
