bandwidth upgrade and strengthening the backbone network

To prepare the future of networks, the Group invests in solutions that facilitate the development of new services, particularly in very high speed infrastructures – fibre optics for landlines, and 3G+ and 4G for mobiles – that enable customers to enjoy the rich variety of multimedia applications.

bandwidth upgrade

  • LTE : (Long Term Evolution) is the next evolution of mobile technology. It  is also known as 4G to distinguish it from 3G/3G+. This new technology  has been designed to offer higher performance, higher capacities and  lower costs in an environment in which mobile broadband multimedia uses  are growing at a strong rate, while ensuring backward compatibility with  GSM and 3G/3G+. France Telecom-Orange has committed itself in March  2012, to deploy, by 2015, 4G / LTE networks in European countries where  it operates.
    • In the United-Kingdom, Everything Everywhere offers 4G services to consumers and businesses across 10 towns among them London since 30 October 2012. The company has an aggressive 4G rollout plan in place with six further cities coming online in the run up to Christmas, with further cities and rural locations planned for 2013, and 98% of the population due to be covered by the end of 2014.
    • Commercial 4G services were also launched in Chişinău, the capital of Moldova, on 20 November 2012.
    • In France, Orange 4G arrived in Lyon, Lille and Nantes on 21 November 2012, after Marseille, which has coverage since June 2012. In April 2013, 4G coverage will be available in 10 cities. Orange was also the 1st operator to launch a 4G offer for professional customers and companies on 22 November 2012. 4G offers for wider public will be launched in February 2013.
    • Technical rollouts have started in 2012 in Belgium, in Spain (Valencia, Barcelona), in the Dominican Republic and in Luxembourg.

  • fibre optics in France : the FTTH deployment has started in 2007. France Telecom-Orange has  signed in 2011 with Free and SFR, and in 2012 Bouygues, infrastructure  sharing agreements to accelerate the deployment of optical fiber. France Telecom-Orange planned to invest approximately 2 billions euros by 2015  with the objective of covering 10 million homes by 2015 and 15 million  by 2020, representing almost 60% of French homes.

strengthening the backbone network

The  Group’s very high speed global network is one of the most extensive  infrastructures deployed by any international operator. To accommodate  regular growth in traffic, the size of the network must continually  adjust to anticipate bandwidth demand, supported by substantial  investments in the backbone network. At the centre of this strategy is  deployment of technologies that boost the capacity of existing networks,  coupled with the creation of new links, including submarine cable  systems.
