France Telecom-Orange has made ambitious commitments to reduce its CO2 emissions by 20% and its energy consumptions by 15% between 2006 and 2020.
The networks and information systems account for about 66% of the Group’s total energy consumption. Reductions in these areas of action are essential and represent a real challenge given the current growth in uses and the continuing increase in data traffic.
In this way, various actions have been launched to master energy consumptions such as widening climate range in our technical sites, virtualizing serveurs in data centers, sharing network infrastructures with our competitors or replacing the oldest equipments by more energetically efficient ones.
An ambitious solar energy plan has also been deployed and has been rewarded by the price of the “Best Mobile Technology for Emerging Markets” at the Global Mobile Awards 2011. Each year, the solar sites programme saves more than 25 million litres of fuel and 67,000 tonnes of CO2 and provides 13 GWh of solar energy across the AMEA radio network.
In 2011, results have been promising with a decrease of 6% in energy consumption and of 13% in CO2 emissions compared to 2010.
To reach its objectives by 2020, the Group is going to launch innovation plans with its suppliers and the Orange Labs in order to provide the market with more energetically efficient equipments in the next few years. The cooperation of all the players in the IT and telecommunications sectors is crucial in order to be able to achieve these objectives.
