On December 19, 2012 in Banjul, Gambia, France Telecom-Orange and the other members of the ACE consortium announced the commissioning of the first phase of the ACE (Africa Coast to Europe) submarine cable which, in this first phase, links France to São Tomé and Principe. The cable, which will be extended to South Africa in its second phase, expands access to broadband internet services in Africa and provides additional capacity to existing international networks.
