Orange and Louvre-Lens, inventing the 21st Century museum
This project, born of a three-way collaboration between Orange, the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Regional Council and the Louvre, is opening the doors to a new type of museum. As a major driver for the urban and economic development of the region, Louvre-Lens is creating a new interface with the public, introducing unique applications for new technologies in the service of the visitor experience.
From the launch date of 4th December 2012, Orange will be offering a visitor guide which will, for the first time in a museum, be based on a 3D visualisation of the galleries.
an innovative visitor guide loaned to visitors on site
The museum's visitor guide, provided free of charge on site, accompanies visitors through the Great Gallery, the Glass Pavilion (Pavillon de Verre) and the temporary exhibition gallery, offering audio and video commentary from curators and lecturers, as well as a 3D visualisation of the route.
The experience can be extended back at home: using their entrance tickets, visitors can go to the website to revisit their favourite pieces, as recorded in the course of their visit.
the official mobile app, to help organise a visit and discover the history of the site in a new way
Alongside the visitor guide, this application can be downloaded for free from the App store and Google Play. It has been designed to help the visitor make the best possible preparations for their visit, and on site to explore the museum’s park with its mining history, using augmented reality.
a partnership built on research
Ever since 2010, teams from Orange Labs and Louvre-Lens have been involved in a working party dedicated to innovation. This collaboration has already led to the emergence of the first projects, which today have become avenues of research:
• a prototype tactile 3D tablet, linked to a spatial expression of sound and vibration, enabling exciting interaction with virtual objects and environments
• an experiment in gesture-based interaction with 3D interfaces, to intensify the user’s sense of immersion
• 3D gesture-based navigation using smartphones, for simple and natural navigation through a catalogue of artworks
Visitors to the Louvre-Lens museum will be invited to take part in this research, with regular tests of new public interface projects following the opening phase. With the Louvre-Lens project, Orange is once again proving its commitment to culture and its wish to develop innovative digital tools that are accessible to all, in all fields, even the most unexpected. As well as its commitment to the Louvre, with this new partnership Orange is also confirming its involvement in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region and its Regional Council, where the Group is active and strongly invested in supporting the region’s drive for innovation, in particular with the roll-out of the improved network.
The Louvre-Lens Museum will open to the public on 12th December 2012. Orange will remain a partner of the project for three further years.
