a firm commitment to Human Rights

France Telecom-Orange was one of the first businesses to sign the United Nations Global Compact in 2000, thereby affirming its commitment to respecting and promoting fundamental Human Rights through what the company does and through its orbit of influence. Respect for the fundamental principles that are set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in the International Labour Organisation are a prominent feature of the Group’s ethics charter.

In 2006, France Telecom extended the scope of its commitment when it signed a worldwide agreement with the Global Union alliance the UNI on fundamental social rights within the Group.  Through this agreement, France Telecom emphatically reasserts its drive to respect fundamental human rights both at internal level and in its relationship with suppliers and sub-contractors.

These commitments are implemented through being progressively rolled out in the various countries in accordance with the local situation and with national authority figures.
The Group is committed to accounting for its actions in a transparent manner, and in order to do this will be basing their actions on the indicators of respect for Human Rights as set out in the Global Reporting Initiative.

The Group’s Human Rights commitments are monitored at the highest level of the business, mainly through the company’s Governance and Social Responsibility Committee.  This Committee is tasked with examining the principal risks and opportunities that relate to the environment, to social policies implemented by the Group, to the body of the information published by the Group that is linked to societal and environmental issues, and to the principal aspects of the Corporate Social Responsibility policy.

These commitments are implemented via three channels: our human resources, our purchases, and freedom of expression.
