Orange CAN (Africa Cup of Nations)

Football is unique in its ability to unite people through reaching across national borders and different languages.


Nowhere does this ring truer than in Africa, where Orange has signed an eight-year partnership with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to be the title sponsor of the continent’s six major football competitions until 2016, including the flagship Africa Cup of Nations.
For several years, Orange has proudly sponsored the national football teams of the Ivory Coast, Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Botswana.
The partnership with the CAF signed in 2009 takes its relationship with football to the next level, signalling Orange’s commitment to and support for the sport that Africa has made its own.

  • Orange Africa Youth Championship (U-20)
  • Orange/CAF Champions League
  • Orange/CAF Confederation Cup
  • Orange CAF Super Cup
  • Orange African Nations Championship

the CAN tournament is the Federation’s flagship football event

In 2012, Orange retransmitted the opening ceremony and each of the 32 matches to four million people on TV and the web. The CAN captivating the attention of the continent’s one billion citizens over three weeks every two years.

In 2013, The Orange Africa Cup of Nations, SOUTH AFRICA 2013 tournament kick-off January 19th in Johannesburg, South Africa. Orange is once again the official partner of this major sporting event, the largest of its kind in Africa. In addition to its role as sponsor, the event is particularly important for Orange because six of the teams who will be competing come from countries where the Group operates its own network: Côte d'Ivoire, Niger, Mali, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tunisia and Morocco. Orange will be present on the ground in South African stadiums but will also offer a variety of digital services on mobile phones (for which it has rights to exclusive content) and on the web via its www.StarAfrica.com portal and on the live Orange blog.

 

 what Orange delivers

During the CAN and other tournaments, Orange brings the excitement of the live spectacle to millions of African supporters via its dedicated mobile platform service, Football Fan Club (FFC).
The FFC is a pan-African community of football enthusiasts. It answers the demand for regular rich content and news on CAF competitions as well as on European leagues and local matches. It is freely available on the USSD portal, the vocal server Foot News, and online at StarAfrica. It offers SMS alerts for goals and results, and features online games as well as tools for chatting and sharing.

At the first CAN tournament in 1957, only three countries participated: Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia. Egypt beat Ethiopia 4-0.
