At the
Angoulême International Comics Festival, taking place from January 27 to 30, Éditions Rackham will be presenting the French edition of
María and I created by the Spanish cartoonist Miguel Gallardo, whose publication is being supported by the
Orange Foundation.
Miguel Gallardo is the father of María, an autistic girl: he presents a delicate and amusing portrayal of how María sees the world. The author will be in Angoulême for some book-signing sessions.
María and I was named Best Album and Best Script at the Barcelona Comics Show in 2008, and in the same year received the Premio Nacional del Cómic de Cataluña.
Also published in Italy and Germany, the book has been brought to the big-screen by Félix Férnandez de Castro with a documentary (
María y yo), in which María and Miguel Gallardo are the protagonists. When it was released in cinemas in Spain, the film was well received by critics and audiences.
The book and the documentary have helped encourage interest in issues relating to autism. Since then, Miguel Gallardo has actively been taking part in conferences and debates around María and I, both throughout Spain and in other European countries. He has also directed an animated short film produced by the Fundación Orange in Spain: María’s journey.
making the world more accessibleSince being created in 1987, the Orange Foundation has been conducting a major corporate philanthropy program, following on from the Group's mission: giving everyone the means to communicate better.
It aims to create links between individuals, and more specifically facilitate communication for those who may be excluded for various reasons, from their health to their disability or their economic situation.
