In 2007, the
Orange Foundation invited 7 photographers of
Magnum Photos to show its actions in corporate philanthropy. Their work was presented in the exhibition a world to share in Paris at first, then went on tour in several European countries.
Some Magnum photographers wanted to continue this work ...
After
Martine Franck and
Alessandra Sanguinetti, it is the turn of Magnum photographer Thomas Dworzak
* to present its insights.
In Romania it is especially hard for young people with visual or hearing impairments to find work. They therefore need to be helped with appropriate educational programmes from an early age.
In October 2008, the Magnum photographer Thomas Dworzak photographed projects of the Light into Europe association which provides sensory impaired children and young adults with access to education, information and employment. With the help of Orange in Romania, he met volunteers, children and their parents during their sign language classes and training activities.
As he said after this experience: “I was moved by the way people deal with their disabilities, and how they all develop their other senses: for instance, deaf and dumb children taking piano lessons, and the blind singing with rich and resonant voices. I was also deeply touched by the relationship and solidarity that exists between them, with the hearing impaired helping the blind to walk. In short, I saw a kinder, gentler world.”
*Born in Koetzting, Germany in 1972. Thomas Dworzak began to travel and photograph in Europe and the Middle East in his late teens. After photographing the war in the former Yugoslavia, he lived in Georgia from 1993 until 1998. During this period he documented the conflicts in Chechnya, Karabakh and Abkhazia. A Magnum member since 2004, Dworzak has mainly covered the conflicts following the 9/11 attacks.
