in India, Orange launches ‘Sunshine’, a new program of the Shankara Special School supporting girl’s education
January 25, 2010 - Orange Business Services, the enterprise communications arm of the France Telecom Group, in collaboration with the Orange Foundation, the group’s corporate foundation, have committed to support ‘Sunshine’, a new program of the Shankara Special School, based in Noida and part of the Sri Sharada Peetham non-governmental organization.
The ‘Sunshine’ program aims to improve the lives of 70 underprivileged young women, including 30 with special needs by providing them vocational training in the following areas: pottery, candle making, glass painting and tailoring with embroidery. Knowledge and soft skills, such as spoken English, and basic computer and marketing skills will also be taught to the young women, so that they will become self sufficient, and will have a better chance to earn a living for themselves and their families.
Under this initiative, Orange’s employees in India will also be volunteering to support the young women in imparting soft skills, as well as helping them to sell the goods by setting up kiosks.
to help people to communicate better
This project, which is supported by the Orange Foundation, is among the key CSR projects for the company in India. Since it was founded in 1987, the Orange Foundation has developed corporate philanthropy programs which are an extension of the France Telecom Group’s mission: help people to communicate better. The Foundation’s programs focus on 3 key areas: health & disability, education, and culture. Today, the Foundation supports projects in over 30 countries, working closely with the Orange network of companies and foundations, as well as international and local non-profit organizations.
In 2009, the Foundation supported 31 projects in the area of girls education in developing countries, in order to improve conditions (building classes, providing clean water, sanitation, electricity…), provide study grants (high-school and university levels), pre-school programs, as well as literacy and vocational training programs.
