Orange Labs presents a series of recommendations to promote broadband Internet access in emerging countries

September 30th, 2009 - Both multinational and multicultural, the Orange Labs network has 16 laboratories on three continents, with locations in China, France, Japan, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States, in addition to its newest sites in Jordan and Egypt. A multidisciplinary team is assembled for each project, combining skills in research and development, marketing, and network and information systems.

Keen to maintain its technological lead and to create an "ecosystem" of top-flight laboratories, the Group is taking part in collaborative programmes on several major topics: network convergence, housing services and the future of mobiles.

In this context, Orange Labs is taking part in the Digital World Forum project on Accessible and Inclusive ICT (DWF), co-financed by the European Commission as part of its 7th Framework Programme for Research. This project aims to promote the development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Africa and Latin America.

The results of the DWF project and the recommendations issued by partners on future working guidelines it's presented in Brussels on 30 September, at the project closing meeting. This event will include discussions, debates and round tables on low-cost technologies’ potential for emerging countries, as well as the need for research and future financing. The Cairo laboratory will present the DWF recommendations for broadband access, which it played a key role in developing.

Already established in 15 African countries, the Group is once again demonstrating its desire to play its part in bridging the digital divide by providing solutions that help the day-to-day lives of those concerned, and contributing to economic development.
