UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund) in Egypt, under its partnership with
Mobinil, consolidated subsidiary of the France Telecom Group, is currently implementing
two projects in Upper Egypt until March 2009, in the areas of health and education,
in support of national efforts to enhance the well-being of children in Egypt.
Both projects are particularly focused on the health and education of girls,
because investment in girls’ education yields some of the highest returns of all
development investments, creating both private and social benefits for individuals,
families, and society at large: lowers infant and child mortality rates, increases
women's labor force participation rates and earnings, and develops intergenerational
education benefits among others.
In the framework of this partnership, Mobinil launched a communication campaign
in 2007 during Ramadan concerning the situation of disadvantaged Egyptian
children. A portion of revenue from each mobile phone call during the period was
donated to UNICEF for 2 projects which are part of the philanthropy policy group.
community based health
To reach the Millennium Development Goal on child mortality, Egypt has to achieve
by 2015 an infant mortality rate of 22.3 per 1000 live births; it currently stands
at 33 per 1000 live births. About 50% of under-five deaths occur during the child's
first 4 weeks, in addition, regional disparities still persist. This project aims
to set-up actions, especially to help pregnant women, and women and their children
in order to reduce the mortality rates of infants during their first 4 weeks.
access to quality pre-primary education
Pre-primary education plays an important role in a child's developmental readiness
for primary education leading to better retention rates in schools. Today, in
Egypt, there still a large number of teachers currently serving the 4-5 age group whom
are not specialized and therefore require special training, besides more teachers
need to be recruited.
