UMA and femtocells: technologies that dovetail well?

a conference to follow online
On November 20, at 5 pm (4 pm in London), Lauren Town, the head of Unik, will be speaking alongside Steve Shaw, vice president of marketing and development for Kineto Wireless, during a web conference in order to explain the opportunities offered by UMA and femtocells.
This web conference will make it possible to understand Orange’s position on this strategic subject for the development of convergence.

what one have to know

Unlicensed Mobile Access or UMA represents a technology that is replacing the physical tier of GSM and GPRS networks and using the internet network through 2.4 GHz frequency bands that are free to use, where we can find Bluetooth and Wi-Fi amongst others. Its aim is to converge communication protocols for mobile phones, landlines and IT.

A femtocell is a small cellular base station that is perfectly suited to residential or small-scale business environments. By extending coverage, a femtocell makes it possible to connect up to your broadband access provider’s network (DSL or cable) and benefit from its services. The most common models support between two and five mobile phones in a residential setting.

several paths to convergence
Femtocells represent another way of building fixed-mobile convergence. While most convergent architectures involve a new terminal (dual mode) capable of working with existing Wi-Fi terminals at home and at the office, systems based on femtocells do not need any new terminals, but require the installation of new access terminals.
