France
Our objective is to lead the way forward. France Telecom-Orange's quality and technical expertise in this area represent vital assets for winning over customers and ensuring their loyalty. This is true for 3G networks, with a coverage rate of over 95%, as well as ADSL networks, for which the coverage rate is nearly 100%.
In July 2010, the French regulatory authority for post and electronic communications (ARCEP) also confirmed that Orange offers the best mobile network in France, for both data exchanges and voice quality.
To offer the best of mobile internet, particularly for its professional customers, Orange also doubled the performances of its 3G+ network in 2010, moving over to the 14.4 mbps HSDPA standard. Rolled out gradually across France, this network provides professionals on the move with working conditions that offer an equivalent level of comfort to being in the office.
In addition, the Group is in an intensive test phase for the deployment of a new 4th generation network in France, which is set to start up from 2012. Lastly, the Group has made a commitment to invest 2 billion euros in fiber optic. By 2015, 3,600 districts will be equipped, representing 10 million homes. Ultimately, there are two objectives for all these investments: creating value for both our customers and the company. 40,000 staff are working to deploy and maintain networks across France.
Spain
Following on from previous years, Orange has continued with its investments to further strengthen its networks, facing strong demand for new mobile internet uses. At the end of 2010, the Group announced that it would be investing 500 million euros in its mobile networks by 2012. These investments will also cover the convergence of fixed and mobile networks in one single IP technology-based network. This includes 15,000 mobile accesses that will be modernized in order to make very high-speed mobile broadband traffic possible thanks to the HSPA+ and LTE technologies, in addition to achieving energy savings, estimated at 40%, and 70% savings in terms of the space occupied by equipment.
Poland
In 2010, TP rolled out major network initiatives, in line with its commitment to the Polish regulator following the historic agreement signed in October 2009. Stepping up the pace of installations and upgrading broadband lines has already made it possible to increase the number of eligible lines by more than 454,000. Almost 40% of new customers in the fourth quarter of 2010 now have speeds of over 6 mbps. In 2010, the Group also laid the foundations for the arrival of very high speed fixed broadband (VDSL), with speeds in excess of 40 mbps.
Other European countries
In 2010, investments in 3G mobile networks continued at a sustained rate, particularly in Belgium, Switzerland and Romania, to support customers in their digital life, enabling them to access all uses, while responding to growing traffic for data exchanges.
In Armenia, Orange offers the country's most extensive 3G network, covering 94% of the population, with speeds of 14.4 mbps. It was also the second country where the Group introduced high-definition sound.
Alongside this, many tests have been carried out to prepare for the arrival of mobile 4th generation with the LTE or Long Term Evolution technology. This was the case in Armenia, where the general public has been able to discover it, as well as Moldavia and Belgium. The first tests have proved particularly conclusive, with download speeds of over 60 mbps, 10 times quicker than the current mobile network.
Africa, Middle East and Asia
To reduce the digital divide in this part of the world, the Group is making major investments in networks. This is particularly true with submarine cables to provide international connectivity and bandwidth. In Africa, France Telecom-Orange is the international market leader in this area. For instance, one year after bringing the LION submarine cable into service, linking Madagascar to the rest of the world, a new agreement was signed in September 2010 to extend it to Kenya, while serving Mayotte. It will provide this French overseas department with quality broadband internet access from 2012, and will enable Kenya to meet its growing high-speed needs. Orange is also leading the way for the deployment of 3G networks in eight new countries: Botswana, Uganda, Mali, Madagascar, Mauritius, Egypt, Jordan, and Tunisia.
