Watch opera live on Arte and at 300 cinemas thanks to the Orange Foundation

At 6pm today, the Arte channel and 300 cinemas in France and across the world will show a live broadcast of the new French-language production of Verdi’s “Don Carlos”, performed at Opéra Bastille and directed by Krysztof Warlikowski featuring the famous tenor Jonas Kaufmann.

To ensure that as many people as possible have access to music, in 2011 the Orange Foundation chose to support the first Paris Opera broadcasts in cinemas. The programme has continued to grow since then:

  • 2011/12 season: 180 partner cinemas and 38,000 spectators
  • 2016/17 season: 430 partner cinemas and 130,000 spectators

Following this success, the Orange Foundation and the Paris Opera have renewed their partnership for the next three years.
The top opera and ballet performances are now broadcast live in France at UGC and Mega GCR cinemas, as well as 80 independent cinemas in smaller towns.
Internationally, 17 countries (Europe, USA, Canada, Morocco, etc.) broadcast these performances live or at a later time.
This broad audiovisual programme is supplemented by Paris Opera TV partners (Arte, Mezzo and France Télévision) which broadcast seasonal ballet and opera performances on their channels and/or platforms.

Musical philanthropy at the Orange Foundation

For 30 years, the Orange Foundation has worked to bring opera and music to a broader audience, particularly those who are not regularly exposed to culture.
It supports the Paris, Lyon and Rennes Operas, but also festivals such as the Aix en Provence festival which broadcasts opera in cinemas or at open-air events.
The Foundation also supports musical projects at hospitals or retirement homes.
It has also worked on the following for several years:

  • creating youth choirs
  • producing concerts in disadvantaged and rural areas

Finally it supports inter-cultural projects with musicians from across the globe.
The Orange Foundation also has an active policy involving philanthropy in areas such as healthcare and digital education. It is currently active in 29 countries, with 8,000 employee volunteers.
