Recycling used mobiles with Ateliers du Bocage
Depuis 2009, Orange travaille avec les Ateliers du Bocage pour le traitement et la revalorisation des mobiles usagés collectés en France, mais aussi en Afrique.
Since 2009, Orange has been working with Ateliers du Bocage to process and recycle used mobile phones collected in France and in Africa.
Les Ateliers du Bocage are part of the Social Enterprise and Solidarity branch of Emmaüs France. They have a dual social and ecological vocation. Employing people experiencing occupational difficulties, Les Ateliers du Bocage recycle electrical and computer equipment, and mobile phones in particular. In France, mobiles collected in-house and at Orange shops are tested and repaired, and all personal information is deleted so the phones can be reused. Mobile phones unfit for reuse are sent for materials recovery.
Operating in 19 African countries, Orange aims to expand its collection and re-use initiative on the continent, in partnership with the "Les Ateliers du Bocage" organisation.
Four workshops are currently active (Burkina Faso, Niger, Benin and Côte d'Ivoire; the one set up in Madagascar has since closed down). The waste materials collected are sorted before being shipped back to France by sea.
Between 2010 and 2015, 211 tonnes of waste material were collected and 25 jobs created.
