Orange presents its sporting innovations at Mobile World Congress 2023

At Mobile World Congress 2023, we’re highlighting our innovations in very high-speed mobile and immersive technologies. We’ll be demonstrating 11 use cases at the event to show how digital positively impacts our lives, especially in the world of sport, for fans, spectators, and athletes alike.

MWC 2023, global showcase of connectivity

From 27 February to March 2, 2023, tech companies from all over the world meet at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to present their latest innovations in smartphones, mobile apps, and wireless networks. Ever since the GSMA (global mobile association) launched the first MWC in 1987, it has become the world’s largest event dedicated to mobile telephony and connectivity.
This year’s event is highlighting the latest generation mobile networks and the immersive experiences they allow. More than 80,000 visitors are expected to explore the latest tech from 2,500 exhibitors (telecom operators, manufacturers, app publishers, start-ups, etc.).

As a leading operator in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, we’ll be sharing our vision of responsible, ethical, and accessible digital innovation on our Orange stand. Mobile networks and very high-speed connectivity are now essential for working, interacting, learning, and having fun.
Digital can really enhance the sporting experience for athletes and fans in the world of sport, as we’re showcasing through two flagship innovations.

How sport helps drive innovation with a positive impact

The first innovation was developed by Touch2See in collaboration with the 5G Lab at the Orange Vélodrome. The Marseille start-up has developed a tablet with a magnetic disc to mirror the movements of the ball and players during a football match across the pitch in real time. The user can follow using touch and, thanks to the low latency of 5G and the data processing power of edge computing, Touch2See provides an alternative to traditional audio description devices where there’s often a delay. The technology won Orange’s latest “Eventech” challenge and aims to allow visually impaired fans to access and enjoy major sporting events more easily, such as the 2023 Rugby World Cup or the next Paris Olympics in 2024.

On the Orange stand at the MWC, visitors can also feel the sensation of running a marathon in a fun and interactive way through Immersive Run. This technology collects data by motion detection (body-tracking) and processes it in real time to transcribe it visually (data visualization). The result is an interactive immersive experience, in a dome with 360° image and sound projections that allow visitors to experience the emotions of the runners throughout the course.

These two innovations illustrate our expertise in next-generation mobile networks and our ability to innovate in technologies that transform data into enriched experiences which are accessible to all.

Innovations and connectivity at the heart of our daily lives

MWC visitors to our stand can also explore other innovations emblematic of the new uses enabled by very high-speed mobile connectivity:

  • Gany: welcoming and guiding visitors to the stand via a robot developed as part of the Orange 5G Lab network
  • Orange Spain: entertaining people via an immersive dance experience in the metaverse
  • Leia: entertaining people via an AI-enabled 3D tablet
  • SoftAtHome solutions: reducing Wi-Fi consumption to enable energy efficiency
  • IoT Continuum: optimizing building efficiency through temperature control
  • Orange Cyberdefense: securing the latest industrial systems
  • Industry 4.0: remotely controlling a robot via an augmented reality headset
