Satellite support for mobile networks
No coverage in the mountains, offshore, or on remote roads? Now your phone can connect via satellite. With Direct-to-Device technology, compatible smartphones link directly to a satellite. You can keep sending and receiving SMS, even without mobile or Wi-Fi coverage.
Everything happens in your usual messaging app. Turn on satellite mode and send your message. Within seconds, it’s transmitted via a satellite 36,000 km above Earth, then routed back into the mobile network.
This doesn’t replace existing networks but it’s a powerful ally. It’s part of a broader connectivity approach that combines subsea, terrestrial, and satellite infrastructure to keep people connected wherever they are, as simply as possible.
A practical solution for remote areas
Whether you’re trekking, sailing, working on a remote site, or responding after a natural disaster, staying connected is essential. With Satellite Messaging, you can send updates or reassure someone, or coordinate information, even without network coverage. The service is available in mainland France and across 34 countries*, through a partnership with Skylo. It’s open to Orange mobile customers on 5G or 5G+ plans (excluding Sosh), using compatible devices such as Google Pixel 9 and 10, except Pixel 9a.
In France, the option is free until June 2026, before moving to a paid plan. This is just the first step, with more devices and services to come. Orange is also the first European operator to offer satellite SMS directly from a smartphone.
A new step toward full connectivity
This new service strengthens Orange’s commitment to reducing the digital divide and connecting every region.
Satellite doesn’t replace ground infrastructure, which remains essential for everyday connectivity. But in certain situations, it becomes a critical backup, and sometimes a vital one.
With more than 60 years of satellite expertise, Orange continues to expand its capabilities with more complete connectivity. This step opens the door to new use cases and wider coverage.
