Orange Energy
MEA
Description
600 million Africans do not have access to an electricity grid. Orange Energy reduces the social and digital divide by democratizing access to electricity. The principle: customers subscribe via their mobile phone and receive an individual solar kit to supply their homes with electricity. An affordable and ecological solution to stay informed and connected!
Key figures
500,000
people have access to electricity for their primary needs
9 countries
where the initiative is already up and running
2,7
GWh of green energy available to the population
Innovation
Thanks to digital technology, we are the first to offer households on low incomes the option to pay for their service online, at times to suit their budget, while allowing them to continuously benefit from the solar kit. This flexibility is a real plus for our customers.
Replication
Since its launch in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Orange Energy has been replicated in 9 countries: Burkina Faso, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Madagascar, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The format is the same: we purchase solar kits from partners, deploy the digital management platform that we developed specially, and then enable payments to be made via Orange Money, Orange’s electronic wallet.
Contribution to Engage 2025
We firmly believe that democratizing access to electricity improves everyone’s quality of life and increases the income of thousands of isolated or disadvantaged communities. Lighting your home, recharging your phone, allowing children to do their homework in the evening, getting information and relaxing in front of the television, but also generating new income through the internet or by renting a space in your refrigerator – all of this and more becomes possible. And as an added bonus, our solution reduces the carbon footprint of households that depended on wood fires or an oil lamp before.
